From Awkward To Awesome Networking Tips For Athletes {CLICK TO VIEW}

If you are like most people, the idea of networking with strangers brings up fears, cold sweats and anxiety….but it doesn’t have to be like this. The Opportunities (And Pitfalls) Of Social Media for Amateur Athletes {CLICK TO VIEW}

Unlike professional athletes, for whom their sport is their full time job, amateur athletes must often work a full-time job and/or attend school while training for competition on their own time and, more often than not, use their own money to fund their Olympic dreams.

Social media provides amateur athletes with access to powerful tools to build their personal brand, grow a loyal following, connect with influencers & decision makers and secure sponsorship. However, if not used proactively and responsibly, social media can be more harmful than positive.

During this workshop, Trevor Turnbull will review:

• How to establish and manage your online personal brand
• How to build a supportive, engaged fan base online
• How to connect with and provide measurable value for potential sponsors
• How to avoid the risks and pitfalls of social media
• How to use social media to shape your legacy after the game

How Amateur Athletes Can Use LinkedIn To Excel In Life After Sport {CLICK TO VIEW}

As an elite athlete, you already know the dedication, hard work and persistence it takes to excel at your sport. But, have you considered what it will take to excel in the “real world” when the game ends and you are forced to start the next phase of your life?

As daunting as it might sound, there is an online tool called LinkedIn that will help you build your personal brand, connect with influencers and decision makers and enable you to control the path of your career after the game ends.

During this workshop, Trevor Turnbull will review:

• How to create a LinkedIn profile that showcases your unique skills and attributes
• How to ensure your ideal employer find you on LinkedIn before your competition
• How to use LinkedIn to grow your network and connect with decision makers
• What NOT to do on LinkedIn (and why this one thing could ruin your career after sport)
• How to engage on LinkedIn in 15 minutes or less per day to see measurable results

The Opportunities (and Pitfalls) of Social Media for Coaches {CLICK TO VIEW}

College coaches are responsible for ensuring their student athletes are focused, prepared and ready to compete at a high level on game day.

With the potential distractions and negative outcomes that can result from improper use of social media by student athletes, the first reaction of most coaches might be to ban it all together.

However, today’s student athlete is challenge with balancing school work, part time jobs and athletic responsibilities, all while maintaining a social life on campus.  And, for most college students, social media is their primary outlet to express themselves and maintain a connection with their peers.

Social media provides student athletes with access to powerful tools they can use to build their own personalities beyond the team or college they represent.  And, as their coach, if you do not provide them with a clear understanding of the responsibilities and expectations of their social media usage, you are missing an opportunity to connect with your athletes on a level that they understand and respect.

In this session, Online Reputation Strategist – Trevor Turnbull will review:

  • The “social etiquette” of today’s student athlete (the “Millennial” generation)
  • The most popular social platforms used today (and it’s not Facebook)
  • How to monitor your athletes on social media (and still respect their privacy)
  • Why you need to establish a social media policy for your athletes (and how to do it)
  • How you can use social media to benefit your own coaching career

At the end of this presentation, you will walk away with an understanding of how student athletes and coaches are using social media.  And, you will be inspired to view social media as a tool to improve your connection with your athletes, rather than a public relations nightmare waiting to happen.

The Opportunities (and Pitfalls) of Social Media for Student Athletes {CLICK TO VIEW}

As a student athlete you are challenged with balancing school work, athletic responsibilities and in some cases, a part time job, all while maintaining a social life on campus…….if you can find the time!

That is why, for many student athletes, social media is a primary outlet to express ones self and maintain a connection with peers outside of the classroom.  And, in today’s connected world, it is easier than ever to engage in social media via smartphones and other mobile enabled devices.

When used properly, social media can provide student athletes with powerful tools to build a personal brand that will go with them long after their college athletic career is over as they transition into their professional life.

However, without clear expectations and policies established by coaches and athletic departments, social media can be a source of frustration for student athletes and may result in actions that can have a significantly negative impact on one’s reputation and the image of the team or college they represent.

In this session, Online Reputation Strategist – Trevor Turnbull will review:

  1. Why Google can be your best friend or your worst nightmare!
  2. How to avoid the risks and pitfalls of social media engagement
  3. The BIG mistake many people make on social media (and how to avoid it)
  4. How social media can help you land your dream job after college
  5. How your Coach can impact the rest of your life with one comment on social media

At the end of this presentation, the goal is NOT to have you walk away feeling as though you’ve been lectured on what NOT to do on social media.  Rather, you will be empowered with an understanding of how social media can positively impact your experience as a student athlete and set you up for success in your life after college

Social Media for Sponsors: Leveraging The Athlete Brand Online {CLICK TO VIEW}

With social media, athletes now have access to powerful tools to build their personal brands. Athletes are negotiating greater contractual freedom to build and leverage their own personalities beyond the team they represent. Concurrently, we are entering the “post‐privacy”era. Nothing happens outside of camera range. If an athlete brushes off a fan’s request for an autograph, stumbles drunkenly out of a bar or gives a passerby the finger, you can bet that it will be Tweeted within minutes and grainy cellphone footage will find its way onto YouTube within hours.

Canadians have an ambivalent relationship with celebrity culture. We respect Sidney Crosby (because he doesn’t take himself too seriously) but mock Celine Dion (because she does). For athletes seeking to build a personal brand, for sponsors seeking to leverage the athlete brand, and for NFPs seeking alignment with an athlete, there are opportunities and there are pitfalls

During this presentation you will learn:

  • Why professional athletes are turning to social media
  • The risks and rewards or working with a professional athlete
  • How to integrate your brand with the athletes personal brand
  • 5 keys to success in working with professional athletes

  • How to optimize your Linkedin profile for MAXIMUM exposure in your chosen field
  • Why you need to leverage the power of Linkedin Recommendations and Endorsements
